The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) celebrates the role of sport in advancing diversity and social cohesion. The values inherent in sport, such as mutual respect, solidarity and integrity, are at the heart of the mission of UNAOC. The Alliance has underpinned sport as a key strategy in fulfilling its mandate of building social inclusion and bringing together people from diverse cultures, religions, and ethnicities. Through various programmes and initiatives, UNAOC continues to demonstrate its commitment to building more peaceful and inclusive societies through sport.
To this end, UNAOC partnered with renowned soccer clubs and international sports entities and launched the #OneHumanity campaign. It brings together football stakeholders, including clubs, leagues and federations, in standing against discrimination, xenophobia, and identity-based conflict. Other programmes implemented through collaborations with different stakeholders include the “United Nations Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and Its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism” and the Sport for One Humanity initiative that strengthens the capacities of civil society organizations (CSOs) to maintain and expand their contribution to peace and development.

Issues such as discrimination, and intolerant policies hinder the inclusive nature of that sport. Ensuring equitable opportunities for all, regardless of background, and implementing strict anti-discrimination policies are essential steps. Achieving this requires the active participation and collaboration of various stakeholders. These include players, football associations, clubs, governments, officials, fans, and wider society. By combining these efforts we can create a culture of respect and inclusivity. This comprehensive approach not only helps combat racism in football but also promotes broader social change, demonstrating the power of sport as a unifying force.
